The Energy Storage Coalition was formally established on May 4, 2023 in Brussels, Belgium

According to foreign media reports, the Energy Storage Coalition was officially established on May 4, 2023 in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The establishment of the organization aims to support sustainable clean energy by deploying energy storage solutions, thus accelerating Decarbonization of the European energy system.

The event, attended by more than 150 policymakers, industry and association representatives, provided an opportunity to discuss how the design of the EU electricity market can address the barriers to deploying and using energy storage technologies in Europe today.

The session was moderated by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, who presented the work the European Commission is doing to promote the deployment of renewable energy and energy storage, particularly in the context of the upcoming revision of the EU electricity market design. Simson emphasized that energy storage systems are a key factor in building a future-proof, resilient and decarbonized energy system, and the Energy Storage Alliance will be an important interlocutor in the future.

The partners of the Energy Storage Alliance analyzed and discussed how energy storage systems can provide flexibility to ensure that the EU meets its decarbonization goals, strengthens energy security, and achieves lower energy prices.

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association, pointed out, "Renewable energy generation in the European Union surpassed fossil fuels in the last winter. It is clear that solar power facilities and other renewable energy generation facilities can power Europe in all seasons. We need Building a robust energy infrastructure that enables year-round supply from renewable generation facilities to be the norm means taking energy storage deployments seriously and preparing for stable grid operations.

Patrick Clerens, secretary-general of the European Energy Storage Association, emphasized that energy storage systems can help alleviate grid congestion and reduce grid expansion costs. Accelerating electrification is critical, and this is where energy storage can help reduce costs and facilitate further deployment of renewable energy.

The meeting produced a productive discussion on how upcoming legislation will accelerate renewable energy development and energy storage deployment, and demonstrated the need to reform the design of European electricity markets to ensure energy security, which must be achieved through non-fossil energy solutions to fulfill.
